The fear of death was on many people’s minds after an epidemic ravaged the town.
Those who survived tended to either feel angry that their loved ones were taken away from them, or bewilderment as to why they were spared and others were not so “lucky.”
But regardless of the townspeople's feelings on the recent events, the mayor found it necessary to speak to his masses on this subject.
“It was very much the case before this horrific event occurred that even if the spectre of death did not touch you personally you at least know someone who did.”
“We do not know why this happened, but even if we did, it would hardly remedy that which has already happened; there is only one thing to acknowledge.”
“Take the situation of the butterfly who starts as a caterpillar. The caterpillar knows nothing of anything, it is only guided by the life process to eat and grow.”
“When it has grown too big for its present skin, it will shed its old one for a new one. There is no hesitation; not even fear or even excitement for the future…
….there is only what it is necessary to do.”
“At the time of metamorphosis the caterpillar changes into something new entirely, and in order to change, the caterpillar must completely die away. This death in one aspect is necessary for a greater purpose for the butterfly that is able to soar to new heights in the creature’s existence…
...all of this unknown to the creature, the only thing there is what happens next.”
