A world-traveling tourist decided that France was to be their next destination. To prepare for the trip, the tourist had in mind to completely immerse themselves in the culture and language. Classes, courses, textbooks, and guide books were attended and poured over in the 6 months before the trip; giving the traveler a good basis to blend in with the locals as seamlessly as possible. But they were taken aback when they arrived to see the McDonalds’s, KFC’s, and the Starbucks’s strewn amongst the traditional sites. They asked a university student coming out of the Starbucks, “You are the world’s capital for the cuisine, the arts, and the aesthetics that make France “France”... ...why would you choose to soil it with these American corporations?” “Well, our culture will always be there for us to enjoy, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy someone else’s culture.”
